Every design choice needs a reason. Color, typography, layout — whether for a digital product, a printed page, or a data visualization — nothing should exist just because it “looks cool.”
“Looks cool” is lazy. It’s the design equivalent of shrugging your shoulders. Intent matters. But here’s the twist: impact matters more. You might intend to convey trust, clarity, or urgency, but if your execution accidentally communicates confusion, distraction, or outright nonsense, you’ve failed. Every visual decision should have an explanation, and that explanation should connect directly to the story you’re trying to tell.
Nowhere is this more obvious — or more often ignored — than in data visualization. The point of a chart isn’t to impress your design colleagues or win an award. It’s to make the information accessible to the widest possible audience. And that audience isn’t sitting in a pristine design lab with perfect lighting and infinite attention spans. They’re scrolling on their phone, half-awake, half-busy, probably multitasking. If they can’t get it in two seconds, they won’t get it at all.
That’s why simplification isn’t a compromise — it’s the goal. The simplest, clearest visualization is almost always the most effective. Eliminate clutter. Strip away decoration. Stop pretending your readers will lovingly study every axis label and legend detail for five uninterrupted minutes. They won’t. You get one glance, maybe two, before they move on.
The goal of modern design is not to be admired — it’s to be understood. Purpose plus simplicity will beat ego plus complexity every single time. The best design doesn’t call attention to itself. It doesn’t ask for applause. It’s a framework that allows the content, the story, the data to shine.
And there’s the paradox: when you’ve done it right, no one will talk about your design. They’ll talk about the message. They’ll talk about the idea. They’ll actually get it, and that’s the entire point.
So if you’re designing to be noticed, you’re missing the plot. Design to be invisible, and suddenly, everything important becomes clear.
